Papers, 1810-1932 (bulk 1849-1912).

Collection primarily consists of the papers of Robert Dabney Minor (1827-1871) of the United States and Confederate States navies. It includes his correspondence, 1849-1871, while serving in the U.S. Navy (especially during the Paraguay Expedition of 1858-1859) and while commanding the Confederate Naval Ordnance Works in Richmond, Va., and serving in the James River Squadron during the siege of Petersburg, Va. A letterbook, 1868-1869, supplements other materials concerning his postwar career as superintendent of mining and transportation for the Dover Company at its iron mines in Amherst and Appomattox counties, Va. Among his personal account books, 1854-1902, is one kept in Canada concerning a planned attempt to free Confederate prisoners of war from Johnson's Island, Ohio. Also, includes correspondence, 1851-1912, of Minor's wife, Landonia (Randolph) Minor (1830-1912) of "Linden," Fauquier County, Va., with family members and friends; accounts, 1852-1912, in part concerning the Episcopal Church; and a commonplace book, 1858-1869. Also, contains correspondence, 1859-1872, of George Buckner Minor (1808-1879) of the Confederate States Navy Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography; correspondence, 1859-1864, and other materials of Robert Randolph (1835-1864), commander of Co. H, 4th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, C.S.A.; correspondence, 1863- 1916, and an account book, 1917 (concerning fund-raising for the Young Men's Christian Association of Richmond, Va.), of Mary Washington Ball (Minor) Lightfoot (1851-1930); and scattered papers of other members of the Ball, Carter, Minor, and Randolph families.
